WHY CHOOSE US?

DCLA is the only internationally accredited diamond grading laboratory in the country, recognised by CIBJO, listed on RapNet, and trusted by IDEX. Every report reflects the highest global standards of precision and transparency.

Accuracy & Transparency

We strictly adhere to the standards of the International Diamond Council (IDC) and the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO). These are the most rigorous diamond grading frameworks in the world, and they guide every report we issue.

Commitment to Quality

DCLA employs advanced technology, including DiamondSure and DiamondView, alongside decades of hands-on diamond expertise. Every stone is graded in-house using both instrumentation and multi-expert visual assessment.

Independence, Guaranteed

We are fully self-funded and receive no backing from the diamond or jewellery trade. This guarantees impartiality in every grade issued and underpins our written grading guarantee, the only one of its kind in Australia.

Meet the founder

Bruce Cohen

Began in the diamond industry in the 1970s under the guidance of his father, David Cohen, in Johannesburg. He remains part of DCLA’s active management today.

Michael Cohen

Bruce’s eldest son, trained as a polisher, cleaver, and marker with a major De Beers sightholder. He later established diamond offices and cutting works in Kimberley, Wolmaransstad, and Johannesburg.

Roy Cohen

Bruce’s youngest, worked for Anglo American before joining the family business in the 1990s. He was active in rough diamond trading and developing mining interests across southern Africa.

History of DCLA

In 2001, the Cohen family recognised a gap in the Australian market: there was no laboratory adhering to the IDC standard, which until then was only available in Antwerp, South Africa, and Germany.

With the assistance of Mr. Les Milner (then Head of the Jewellery Council Laboratory, now Director of GIA South Africa), DCLA was established to offer internationally compliant certification to Australian consumers and jewellers.
